Parent & Family Orientation 2024

Join Us for Parent & Family Orientation in August! This optional program is designed to help Eagle First Year and Transfer families become more acquainted with American University resources and the professionals who will work with their Eagles on campus. The afternoon program will include an informal reception and offer sessions on various topics, including academic success, campus involvement, and safety, and insights from current students and alumni.

*This program is for Eagle parents and families, not including your AU student.* (AU New Student Orientation starts on Tuesday, August 20.)

Sunday, August 18 or Monday, August 19

3:30 p.m. - check-in & light refreshments,  4:00 p.m. - sessions begin (program end time: 6:30 p.m.)

Location: Mary Graydon Center + various campus spaces, American University

Choose the day that works best for your schedule or aligns with your student’s move-in date. (Families moving in on Saturday are welcome to join the Sunday session.)

*Each family is limited to up to two (2) registrants, and each attendee must register individually.

*Registration is filling quickly due to space limitations.

Please select one session per block. Sessions will be offered on both days.

Block A   4:00 - 4:45 p.m. (select one session in Block A)

Letting Go & Helping Your Eagle Get Off the Ground: Learning to fly involves falling down and sometimes an Eagle might have difficulty soaring. There are resources to support your student getting back on track. Families, as supporters of students, will learn about resources to help their students get back up and manage their college experience with the assistance of care and support staff. This session will review academic resources, psycho-social well-being programs and services, and student care and support systems. (also offered in Block B)

*Safety & Security: This session will provide an overview of the safety and security services available to students, staff, faculty, guests, and visitors. It will also cover the public safety programs and operations in place to protect the university community. (also offered in Block B)

*Eagles Panel: Join us for a conversation with current students to hear about their experiences at AU. (also offered in Block B)

Block B   5:00 - 5:45 p.m. (select one session in Block B)

*Getting Involved at AU: Discover how your student can engage in community service, participate in campus events and programs, and get involved in numerous student organizations! Join us for an insightful program highlighting the diverse opportunities for student involvement and leadership on campus. Learn how the Center for Leadership & Community Engagement and the Center for Student Involvement support and advise AU students to ensure they find their perfect fit and make a meaningful impact during their time at AU.

*How to Support Your Student's Academic Success: Help your student start and stay strong in their academic journey. This session with Dr. Bridget Trogden (Dean of Undergraduate Education and Academic Student Services and Professor) will focus on tips and questions for you to support your student in the coming weeks.

*Feeding Success: Discover the culinary delights and innovative dining experiences that await your students at American University. Explore our diverse menu options, sustainability efforts, and meal plan offerings designed to nourish and inspire. Join us for a journey into university dining.

*Career & Internship Conversations: Learn how the career offices at AU advise and support students from their first year up to, and beyond, graduation. We look forward to partnering with AU families so students can successfully access resources, including one-on-one advising, online tools, employer engagement events, and career education programs and workshops.

*Resources for Belief and Religious Identities: Kay Spiritual Life Center is American University's place for persons of all beliefs to explore meaning, discern purpose, and find community. Everyone believes something - come learn about the rich diversity of beliefs at one of the oldest interfaith centers in the nation.

Eagle Alumni Review: Hear from AU alumni about what made their AU experience special, including their transition to life on campus and in DC, how they got involved at AU, and the value of their AU experience after graduation.
